i go through several periods of decluttering time & time again in my physical environment- wherever that is.
CLUTTER IN THE ENVIRONMENT CREATES CLUTTER IN THE MIND!
there is a reason traditionally people do what we call “spring cleaning”. this was something mama would always do every year when i was growing up & for some reason it was always so fun to me. spring is the time of year when everything is coming anew after the cold winter. it is only right aligned that we clean & declutter this time of year. when we declutter - get rid of the old, we make space for the new to come into your life.
THE HOW TO
when decluttering i use a structure which i picked up from another blog (not quite yet recalling which haha!) where 3 piles are made: keep, donate, toss.
#1 KEEP things that are only necessary, things that you will use/wear in the coming months (let’s say 2-3).
#2 (A) DONATE things that are in good condition that you no longer need or intend to use/wear. something i’ve come to adopt when donating is to no longer put things in “garbage” bags (as is a common practice for many when donating clothes for example). the energy of a trash bag is essentially that - TRASH! you are not donating trash, they are considered gifts for something else who is more in need of them than you. put them in baskets, boxes or even suitcases that you will not be using again.
#2 (B): prepare another pile for selling items! based on your needs at the time it is also a good idea to sell some items. you can simply divide the "donate" pile in half or whatever fraction suits you. there are many ways to sell your pre-loved items: FB Marketplace, Poshmark (if you are in the states) or you can even start a thrift store on Etsy, sell to your family & friends or even have a yard sale. when selling i rather use words like "vintage" or "pre-loved" rather than "USED" in the description of the items i am selling. HAVE FUN with it too, give the items funky names, share the story behind the items.
you can check out my very own thrift store here.
sometimes many charities also need money more than they need items so selling & giving the money to your favorite charity is another option.
#3 TOSS things that are in bad condition & that you wouldn’t be comfortable giving to anyone else.
in almost all experiences of decluttering for me - whenever i declutter something new comes into my life - whether big or small.
as a kind of “neat freak” who loves organization & overall cleanliness & i’ve come across the beautiful Marie Kondo – whom i truly believe is the QUEEN of organization. this blog post on “How To Use The Marie Kondo Method For Decluttering” covers everything in very simple steps to follow – give it a try!
PRO-TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING
pro-tip #1: cleanse/detox while decluttering – any type! INTERMITTENT, WATER, JUICE, FRUITS, RAW, etc – it doesn’t matter which however WATER is the most powerful.
pro-tip #2: when you are decluttering don't view it as losing something but rather as MAKING SPACE TO INVITE NEW, BETTER THINGS OR EXPERIENCES INTO YOUR LIFE.
how often do you declutter your physical space?
